Description
The Walled Garden, along with its walls, portals, and sculpture, is located 5 meters northeast of the Chinese Temple in the Chinese Garden. This ornamental garden building was created between 1848 and 1860 by John Bateman. It features rock-faced coursed stone, with the portals being chisel dressed. The semi-circular retaining wall has a diameter of approximately 10 meters and stands 1.5 meters high, built against an embankment. At either end of the wall are double-headed Chinese, block-constructed portals. A life-size, painted plaster sculpture of a Brahmin Cow is positioned over the wall at the center of the semi-circle, which was shown with a canopy cover in a 1905 Country Life article. Additionally, two serpent forms are cut into the lawn in front of the retaining wall. This garden is part of the Chinese Garden perambulation, and the whimsical animal forms reflect Bateman's sense of humor, similar to what is seen in the Tea House. The cow sculpture was made on-site by the sculptor Waterhouse Hawkins.
