Description

Rock House and Rose Cottage are a pair of semi-detached houses dating to circa 1840, situated on Smithy Bank in Alton. Constructed of ashlar with edged herring-bone tooling, and featuring smooth-faced ashlar dressings, they are built in the Tudor Gothic style. The roofs are slate with coped verges, and the stacks are integral brick and ashlar. Rock House, the northern property, projects westward. Rose Cottage, to the south, is set back. Rock House has two storeys, a boldly projecting eaves cornice, and two bays. It features 2-light chamfer mullioned windows in rebated frames, and a central blind doorway with a 4-centred head containing a window. Rose Cottage mirrors Rock House in appearance with a projecting eaves cornice, 2 bays, 2-light chamfered mullioned windows in rebated frames, and a centrally positioned doorway with a 4-centred head.
