Description
Townhead Farmhouse is a farmhouse that underwent late 18th century remodelling of a 17th century house, with later alterations. It is constructed of ashlar stone featuring herringbone tooling and has a plain tile roof with coped verges and brick integral end stacks. The main house is aligned east-west and faces south, with two rear wings aligned north-south, linked by a central outshut. The building stands three storeys high with coved eaves and consists of three bays. The second floor has three-light flat face mullioned windows on the left and right, and a single-light casement window in the centre, all in their original surrounds, except for the 20th-century casements elsewhere. The central door is approached by a semi-circular step and is flanked by reeded pilasters, topped with an open pediment over a fanlight. To the left of the centre on the first floor, there is a circular sundial dated 1787. The single-bay rear wings also feature three-light flat face mullioned windows. Inside, there is a date stone inscribed with "W.B. 1626" above the arch to a former stone staircase.
