Description
The Fourdrinier Monument, located approximately 67.5 metres south of the chancel of the Church of St Michael, is a Grade II listed structure dating from around 1850. It is made of ashlar stone and features a square base that shows traces of railings. The square monument sits on a plinth and includes a cornice and an urn on top, although part of the urn is missing. The monument has rebated angles and inscriptions on three sides. It commemorates members of the Fourdrinier family, who died between 1841 and 1900. Notably, Henry Fourdrinier (1765-1854) was the inventor of a machine that produced paper through a continuous process and was the maternal uncle of John Henry Newman.
