Description

The Shrewsbury Arms Public House is a late 18th-century building with a mid-19th-century shopfront, located on Eastgate Street in Stafford. It is constructed of painted brick with ashlar dressings and features a tiled roof with two brick stacks. The building is designed in the Georgian style and stands three storeys high with a four-window range.

At the top, there is a brick cornice with modillions. The shopfront, located at the left end and wrapping around the corner, has panelled pilaster strips topped with turned finials and a modillioned cornice adorned with rosettes. The windows have fixed glazing, panelled aprons, and horizontal bars. The canted corner entrance features an overlight above a half-glazed door. There are two additional entrances, each with doorcases that include pilasters and entablatures, leading to four-pane doors.

To the right, there is a small-paned bowed oriel window, and a small 9-pane sash window is positioned to its right. The ground floor and first-floor windows have sills and wedge lintels above 12-paned horned sashes, while the second-floor windows have sills and 9-pane horned sashes. A lantern is mounted over one entrance, and there is a scrolled wrought-iron corner bracket that holds a sign. The rear of the building features a catslide outshut and two gabled wings, with the left wing having a gabled end. The Shrewsbury Arms is included for its group value.
