Description
Boundary Cottages and Elton Cottage is a late 15th to early 16th century timber-framed open hall that was remodeled in the 17th, 18th, and mid-19th centuries. Its external appearance reflects the later periods. The building is one storey with attics, constructed of colour-washed brick and topped with a tiled roof. Originally, it was a four-bay open hall house made of cruck framing, with some exposed framing visible on the east elevation. A later 17th-century bay, built with post and truss framing, was added to the south. The windows have been replaced with modern casements, and there are two dormers along with one gable featuring curved bargeboards and finials. The gabled porch also has bargeboards and a finial. Inside, a first floor was inserted in the 17th century, showcasing stop-chamfered beams and a massive axial brick stack with baffle entry. Four cruck trusses remain intact internally, along with the original purlins and windbraces.
