Description

The canal milepost at Aston Lock is a Grade II listed structure, dated "R & D Stone 1819" on its shaft. It is made of cast iron, painted black and white, and features a circular post with a moulded head. The post has embossed letters on two convex tablets that read: "Shardlow 46 miles" and "Preston Brook 46 miles." This milepost was likely cast in the foundry of Rangely and Dixon located on Lichfield Street in Stone. The Trent and Mersey Canal, where this milepost is situated, was constructed between 1766 and 1777 by engineers James Brindley and Hugh Henshall.
