Description
The Cartwright Tomb, located approximately 39 meters southwest of the Church of St Michael, is a Grade II listed structure dating from around 1805. It serves as a burial site for members of the Cartwright family, with recorded dates of death ranging from 1805 to 1866. The tomb is constructed of ashlar stone set on a brick base, topped with plain stone slabs.
The chest tomb features stop-chamfered balusters adorned with hollow mouldings and octagonal panels on the sides and ends. The south side includes a slate plaque, while the reeded frieze has decorative paterae at both ends. The catafalque capping displays a fluted frieze with additional paterae and entwined laurel at the ends, with a slate plaque on the south side and another missing on the north. The inscriptions on two panels are worn, and there are inscriptions on the slate plaques as well. This tomb is an interesting example of early 19th-century tomb design.
