Description

The Jervis Mausoleum, located approximately 5 meters east of the Church of St Michael, is a mausoleum for members of the Jervis family, likely built around 1760 and possibly designed by William Robinson. Constructed from ashlar stone with a lead roof, the mausoleum features a rectangular cell flanked by lower wings in a classical style. The south elevation includes a plinth, a pedimented cell with an entrance that has an eared architrave, a large key, a frieze, and a pediment above a studded door. Above the door, there is a plaque in the architrave with a worn inscription, alongside a later plaque dedicated to Admiral St Vincent. The wings are rusticated and topped with cornices. The rear elevation is similar, featuring a high roundel on the cell, with plain niches on the returns.

Inside, the mausoleum has a tunnel vault and square recesses on the returns. To the right, there are three recesses with inscribed panels in architraves commemorating Earl St Vincent, who died in 1823, Swynfel Jervis, who died in 1771, Elizabeth, who died in 1784, William Jervis, who died in 1813, and Jane, who died in 1817. There is one recess to the right and two to the left containing exposed coffins, along with two plaques on the rear wall. John Jervis, Earl St Vincent, who lived from 1735 to 1823, was a notable commander and reformer in the Royal Navy, recognized for his leadership of the British fleet at the Battle of Cape St Vincent in 1797.
