Description
Coppice Mill is a paper mill that was converted to a flint mill around 1840. It is currently derelict and undergoing restoration since 1990. The building likely dates from the mid 18th century, with some alterations made in the mid 19th century. It is constructed of brick with some dressed squared stone and has a tile roof. The structure is single storey and features a wheel on the right return.
The building has a modillioned brick cornice. The open-fronted section on the left has a brick pier, a missing roof, and a stone end wall. The right part has a segmental-headed entrance, which is narrowed by a section of a battered wall that supports the ends of two girders, along with a smaller entrance at the right end. The wheel, located in a pit to the right, has timber spokes and paddles, with an iron hub, rims, and penstock.
Inside, there are two heavy truncated spine beams and a king post truss. The machinery for two flint crushing pans is complete, including a great spur wheel, two horizontal gears, and paddles. The left end is raised and features a wash tub, while a deep pit in front of the left end marks the site of settling tanks. This mill represents a significant survival of an important local industry.
