Description

The Lichfield Drive Railway Bridge in Shugborough Park is a Grade II listed structure built in 1847. This elegant bridge is designed in a classical style and is integrated into the railway embankment, featuring similar facades on both the north and south sides. The central section has a rusticated archway with an elliptical head and a figure-head keyblock. Flanking the archway are a pair of Ionic columns on each side, which border a plain round-headed niche. The bridge includes a moulded frieze and cornice, with a tripartite entablature that is raised above the embankment. This entablature is divided by open balustrading and is topped with heraldic beasts and devices. On either side of the bridge, the curved balustrading follows the slope of the embankment and ends with a stone pier at the level of the drive.
