Description
The presbytery at St Mary's Abbey was built in 1892 and is constructed from coursed rock-faced stone with freestone dressings. It features a clay shaped tile roof with stone coped gable ends and an apex cross, along with stone axial stacks that have weathered caps.
The building has a central entrance and stair hall, with a cross-wing on the left and an attachment to the Chapel of St Mary's Abbey on the right. It is designed in the Gothic style and has two storeys. The south front is asymmetrical with three bays. The projecting gabled cross-wing on the left includes three-light stone Gothic windows with cusped pointed arch lights, while a similar two-light window is located on the first floor of the gable on the right, which has a single-storey wing projecting below. The central porch features wooden braces that support a lean-to canopy, along with two circular cusped windows and a triangular dormer above.
On the west elevation, which is on the side of the cross-wing, there are two-light Gothic windows, with the first floor set in small gables. The rear, or north side, has projecting gables on the left and right, featuring stone Gothic windows and two circular cusped windows between them, along with a triangular dormer in the roof above.
The interior appears to be largely intact, with an entrance hall that has moulded wooden pointed arch doorframes, and an open-well staircase with turned balusters and newels that have finials and pendants.
