Description
The Dark Lantern at Shugborough Hall, built around 1765 by Stuart, is a drum-shaped structure featuring engaged Corinthian columns and a domed top. It is topped with a gilded cauldron beacon and stand, which is derived from a tripod design, adorned with gilded scrolls and dolphin supporters. The design is inspired by the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates, also known as the Lanthorn of Demosthenes. The structure has been recently well restored.
