Description
Meaford Hall, also known as The Manor House, is a building dating from around 1830, with alterations and restoration carried out between 1874 and 1877 by Burn and McVicar Anderson. It is designed in the Jacobean style and constructed of stone, featuring three storeys. The right-hand side has a slightly projecting bay with a stepped gable, while the left side also has a stepped gable. The facade includes five renewed sash windows set in keyed surrounds, with those on the ground floor topped by elaborate strapwork entablatures. The central doorcase is adorned with panelled pilasters that have foliated capitals, supporting a frieze with three escutcheons and a cornice topped with urns. A moulded cornice runs along the first floor and at the eaves, with coped gable ends and tiled roofing.
The garden elevation is particularly attractive, featuring a three-light canted bay on the left and a three-light convex bay on the right, both extending over two storeys and flanked by recessed stepped gables. A central dormer with a semi-circular pediment showcases shell ornamentation, and there is a pierced parapet above. The north side of the building has been largely reconstructed following the demolition of a large wing known as the East India Wing around 1966. Although the interior has undergone significant alterations, the entrance hall still retains a staircase with an elaborate balustrade made of foliated ironwork, as well as a horizontal-sliding divided iron grille at the entrance doorway, featuring wrought panels with a foliated design.
