Description
Limekiln Lock is a canal lock located on the Trent and Mersey Canal, built around 1771 by engineer James Brindley. The structure is made of brick with stone dressings and features a narrow design. It includes steps at the lower end, double timber gates at the lower end, and a single timber gate at the upper end. A footbridge with iron handrails leads to the lower end and has a slot for a tow rope; one side of the footbridge continues along the tow path for approximately 17 meters, over steps to a narrow ledge. There is also an overflow channel to the side. This lock is part of a series on the Trent and Mersey Canal, which played a significant role in the industrial development of Stone.
