Description

East Gate is part of the gate and the only remaining fragment of the medieval town walls in Stafford. It likely dates from the early 15th century. Most of the gate was demolished around 1800, and it was moved for road widening in 1939. It was then rebuilt against the wall of a cottage that was demolished in 1964. The structure is made of dressed squared stone, standing approximately 5 metres tall and 3 metres wide, with some dressed jambs on the right end. A part of the brick cottage wall remains at the rear. East Gate is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
