Description
The Old Deanery is a house that likely dates from the late 16th century, with later alterations and additions. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar and timber frame, with some parts faced in brick and roughcast. The roof is covered in plain tiles and features a brick ridge stack. The building has a lobby-entry plan, with a 16th-century single-cell hall range aligned north-east to south-west, flanked by 17th-century single-cell crosswings aligned north-west to south-east. It stands two storeys high and has a facade with a 1:2:1 bay arrangement, including a central hall range and gabled crosswings on either side, the latter having slightly lower ridges.
The hall range is made of ashlar and features chamfered mullioned windows. The left ground floor window has five lights and a hood mould, while the left first floor window has six lights. There is a blocked two-light window on the right side of the first floor, and a door to the right with a segmental pointed head and an ovolo-moulded surround.
The left wing is roughcast and has a first-floor band with 20th-century casements. The right wing is timber framed, featuring square panels and short straight braces, also with 20th-century casements.
Inside, the building has two large open sandstone fireplaces with timber bresummers, widely chamfered and stopped ceiling beams, and heavily jowelled corner posts. The roof trusses consist of a tie beam and cambered collar with one pair of purlins and a ridge piece.
