Description

The Church of St Mary is a Grade II* listed building located in Wheaton Aston, built in 1857 by Bidlake and Lovatt, with the chancel added in 1893 by Lynam. The church is constructed of random coursed rough faced red and white sandstone, featuring ashlar dressings and tiled roofs that are banded with scalloped tiles, along with crested ridge and verge parapets. It includes a south west porch, a nave, a north aisle, a north west tower, lower transepts, and a chancel, all designed in the Lancet style. The windows are generally two light and pointed, with a notable three light east window showcasing flowing tracery.

Inside, the church has a four bay nave with a pointed arcade to the north and a pointed arch leading to the chancel, which has two bays. The chancel features a scissor braced and boarded roof of a heavier section. Notable interior elements include an oak screen dated 1892, a pulpit with some bas relief carving, a plain font, and pews. The glass in the east window was created by Kempe. This church replaces a 17th century Chapel of Ease, which was a single cell structure without a tower, as depicted in a watercolour located over the south west door.
