Description

Dunsley Hall is a house that dates back to the late 16th century, with rebuilding and additions made in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, and external remodelling occurring in the mid-19th century. The core of the building is timber framed, while the outer walls have been rebuilt in brick, with additional brick structures. It features a plain tile roof with raised verges and brick ridge stacks. Originally, the house had a fully-floored hall range that runs east-west and faces south, with a parlour wing to the west and a service wing to the east, both projecting to the north. The north side of the courtyard was enclosed by an early 18th-century range. A late 19th-century wing now occupies the site of the former service wing. The house has two storeys, with two gabled wings flanking a three-bay hall range that includes a central 19th-century gabled porch. The mid to late 19th-century wood mullioned windows have returned hood moulds, and there are blind lancet loops in the gables of each wing. The entrance features a four-centred door with panelled spandrels and a returned hood mould.

Inside, the hall and parlour wing have a network of heavily moulded ceiling beams with ovolo and ogee mouldings. The exposed timber framing consists of closely spaced studs and straight tension braces. There is wall panelling from the 17th and 19th centuries, and a stone fireplace with a four-centred arch and heavily moulded surround is located at the east end of the hall range. A late 19th-century staircase, designed in a 17th-century style, features perforated splat balusters and elaborate newel finials.
