Description
Landywood Farmhouse is a farmhouse with an early 16th-century core and late 19th-century additions and alterations. The original structure is timber framed, with much of it replaced and added to in red brick, finished with roughcast rendering. The roof is covered in plain tiles. A massive brick external end stack is set on a sandstone plinth. The original two-bay 16th-century house is aligned north-south, with the chimney stack on the south gable. In the 19th century, extensions were added to the north and west, creating a T-shaped plan.
The south front has a 19th-century wing to the left, featuring two storeys with a gable-lit attic and casement windows with segmental heads. To the right is the gable of the 16th-century wing, featuring a contemporary rebuilt stack and partially exposed timber framing in the gable, showcasing closely spaced studs and straight braces with bracketed tie beams. A single-storey lean-to extension with a gabled porch at its south end sits in the angle between the two wings.
Inside, evidence remains of two timber-framed cross-frames, with curved braces visible, as well as a roof truss with a collar and tie beam, and raking struts and a ridge piece.
