Description
The Turf Tavern public house and attached brewhouse is a mid-19th century building that has been altered in the late 19th century, with further internal changes around 1920. It is constructed of brownish-red brick with painted stone dressings and features a grey tiled roof adorned with blue-black decorative ridge tiles. The building has a double depth plan and is part of a terrace, with extensions and additional structures at the rear.
The symmetrical facade is two storeys high and has three windows, with a central entrance accessed by altered stone steps. The upper floor windows are sash windows with projecting stone lintels supported by consoles. On the ground floor, there are bay windows flanking the entrance, with the left bay featuring sash windows with margin lights. The entrance is sheltered by a simple canopy with consoles.
Inside, the hall has a grained matchboard dado and a blocked hatch to the left, with an entrance to the main bar on the right. The bar area includes a simple bar counter and bar back, fixed bench seating, and furnishings made of grained softwood. There is a tiled fireplace and chimneypiece from around 1920. The bar counter retains four hand pumps with ceramic handles dated 1921. To the left of the hall is a smoke room with fixed bench seating that has individual armrests, along with a fireplace and surround from around 1920.
At the rear, there is a courtyard with extensions and alterations from around 1920, as well as a brewhouse and attached shed dating from the early to mid-19th century. This building is of special interest as it is a little-altered example of a modest public house that retains its early plan and simple fittings, along with the rare survival of the rear courtyard and brewhouse.
