Description

The gate piers, located about 150 metres south-west of Lea Head Manor, date from the late 17th century to early 18th century. They are made of rusticated sandstone ashlar and are square in section. Each pier features a moulded capping, likely with a plinth beneath the gravel of the drive, and has half domes above, topped with pineapple finials. There are two wrought iron gates from the late 19th to early 20th century, which are not included in the listing. The gate piers have been moved from their original position, where they once stood in front of the house. The domes and finials have been repaired with cement, and the right-hand pier is twisted and slightly damaged as noted during the last survey in 1984. These piers are stylistically similar to those at Whitmore Hall in Whitmore. If they are indeed from the late 17th century, they represent some of the earliest examples of pineapple motifs, which were first cultivated in England in the 1660s.
