Description
Hall o' the Wood is a house dating from the late 16th century that has been significantly restored over the years. It features a timber frame with plastered infill panels and some brick rebuilding, particularly at the rear, topped with a graded stone tile roof. The building has brick ridge stacks for the hall range and south wing, as well as an integral lateral stack for the north wing with lozenge section shafts.
Originally designed in an H-plan, the hall range runs north-south and faces west, with projections at the western re-entrant angles and to the south. The house is two storeys high with coved eaves and a symmetrical front. The centre is recessed and flanked by inner gabled projections and outer gabled crosswings. The inner projections have three overhangs, twisted colonettes on the ground storeys, and roll moulded first floor rails. The right-hand projection features a door in its left-hand return. The decorative framing includes herringbone pattern bracing and quatrefoil panels, with closely spaced studs and long straight tension braces on the sides, and king-post roof trusses. The windows are ovolo-moulded mullions and casements with leaded panes. There is a contemporary annexe to the right that aligns with the hall range, and a crenellated rainwater head to the left dated 1922.
Inside, there is a 19th or early 20th century staircase in the south-west projection, which has a chapel above it. The south wing features a massive fireplace with a heavily moulded bressumer.
