Description

The Barracks Workshops, built in 1855, are former militia barracks now used as craft workshops. The building is made of red brick with stone dressings and has a plain tiled roof. It consists of a series of two-storeyed and single-storeyed blocks arranged around a quadrangle, with three-storeyed towers at the corners. The street-facing range features a central projecting entrance with a round arched doorway and a turret above, supported by stone corbels and topped with a hipped roof. This section is flanked by three bays that have three and one-light round arched stone mullioned windows on each floor, along with a corbelled string course. The corner towers are three storeys high and consist of two bays. There is a series of axial stacks and overhanging eaves. Inside the quadrangle, lower blocks connect the main range with the return ranges, which have five bays. These blocks feature a series of doors at ground level, with stone mullioned windows on either side and above. The side blocks are connected by lower ranges to the rear corner towers, and the rear range has a central two-storeyed section with three bays, featuring a doorway flanked by small windows. This building originally served as the local militia and fire brigade headquarters.
