Description
The Cooper headstone, located about 7 meters south-east of the south porch of the Church of St John the Baptist, is a Grade II listed headstone commemorating William Cooper, who died in 1803. It is a large rectangular sandstone slab featuring a moulded edge and a double inscription panel beneath a shaped band that reads, "The trumpet shall sound and the Dead shall be raised." The spandrels and the top of the headstone are adorned with fairly high relief carvings of trumpeting angels and a head. This headstone is included in the listing due to its carvings, which, although somewhat archaic in style, represent the local folk art of the period.
