Description
The Brewhouse is a former brewhouse that is now part of the Keele University refectory. It was likely built around 1860 by architect Anthony Salvin, who also rebuilt Keele Hall during that time. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar and features a plain tile roof with fishscale bands. It has a rectangular plan and is designed in a Jacobean style, with two storeys and a garret.
Notable architectural features include chamfered mullioned windows, with one located on the north long side and another four-light window on the west gable end. The entrance is through a late 20th-century university refectory that adjoins the building on three sides. A prominent integral lateral stack with four attached shafts is present on the north long side, accompanied by a louvre to the left. The gable ends are shaped and topped with pointed finials, and there are moulded bulls-eye windows, including one on the west gable that is flanked by two campanile-like turrets.
