Description

KEELE C.P. KEELE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS Garden seating and flanking urns at north end of terrace in front of east side of Keele Hall

GV II

Garden seat and flanking urns. Probably c.1860-80, possibly by William Andrews Nesfield. Sandstone ashlar. Semi-circular garden seat flanked by two highly decorated urns on square pedestals to front.

Included in association with Keele Hall (q.v.). Nesfield had drawn up plans for an arboretum as early as the 1840s, but these were never carried out and it is likely that the garden seats are later, dating from the time of Salvin's re-building of the hall. This type of garden furniture was quite a feature of early and mid-Victorian garden design.
