Description
The gate piers and courtyard wall at Keele Hall were built around 1860, likely designed by Anthony Salvin, who also rebuilt Keele Hall during this period. The gate piers are made of sandstone ashlar with smooth-faced rustication and are rectangular in shape. They feature a moulded plinth and capping, with empty statue niches on each long side, and carved bell-like finials that display the Sneyd coat-of-arms, topped with brass lanterns. To the left, the so-called Freshers' Gate is a modification made after 1950. The courtyard wall runs along the north-west side of the courtyard for approximately 30 meters and stands about 3 meters high. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar, with a chamfered plinth, moulded capping, and rusticated pilasters. There are seven globe finials with fleur-de-lys symbols on pedestals above the pilasters.
