Description
The Harecastle tunnel portals and attached retaining wall are located on the Trent and Mersey Canal in Kidsgrove. They were constructed between 1766 and 1767 by James Brindley, with further work completed by Thomas Telford from 1824 to 1827. The structure is made of brown brick with stone coping. Brindley's entrance, which is set back to the right, features a single rounded arch. Telford's entrance to the left also has a rounded shape and is framed by a rusticated surround. A 19th-century retaining wall connects the two portals and continues along the left side of Telford's entrance, running alongside the east side of the canal for approximately 100 yards. This wall includes regularly spaced pilaster buttresses and connects the former portals to Bridge No. 132.
