Description

The barn and horse engine house, located approximately 30 metres west of the Hills Farmhouse on Beresford Road, is likely from the early 19th century and has seen later additions and alterations. It is constructed of red brick, with some sections built on a coursed sandstone base, and features plain tiled roofs with coped stone verges on kneelers. The building has an 'L'-shaped plan that runs along the south and west sides of the farmyard, with the horse engine house situated in the angle between the two ranges.

The barn has two levels. In the south range, there are two rows of brick ventilators at the upper level, with three lozenge-shaped air vents located between the eaves hatch. The ground floor includes four 20th-century windows, one of which is blocked. The west range features two brick ventilators flanking a wide blocked cart entrance, again with lozenge-shaped air vents between; there are two to the left and three to the right of the blocked entrance, along with three 20th-century windows on the ground floor. The gable end has eight rows of single air vents, some of which are partly blocked by a late 19th or early 20th-century cowshed that is not included in the listing, as well as a loft entrance.

The horse engine house is half-octagonal with infilled sides, and the machinery has been removed. There is a wide threshing entrance located at the rear of the barn.

Inside, the south range features a queen-post roof with seven bays, double-purlins, and collar beams, while the west range has a king-post roof. There are tallet steps at the rear of the south range, along with a fire insurance plate.
