Description
Marsh Barn Farmhouse is a late 17th-century farmhouse with a later addition, situated on the east side of Utoxeter Road in Armitage with Handsacre. The building is constructed of red brick with a plain tile roof featuring raised verges. It has a brick ridge stack, an integral end stack, and a lateral stack serving the cross-wing, all with lozenge section shafts. The plan is L-shaped, with the main range aligned east-west facing south, a projecting cross-wing to the east, and a mid-19th-century rear extension. The main range and cross-wing are two storeys high, with the cross-wing having a slightly lower ridge. The front elevation has a 4:1 window arrangement; 20th-century casements are set within 17th-century openings with flat brick arches. A central 20th-century glazed door provides access. The rear features a two-bay gabled wing with 19th-century casements and brick hood moulds; a canted bay window with a hipped slate roof is on the ground floor of this wing. A lean-to porch is positioned on the right-hand return, alongside garage doors. Steps lead to the right-hand (west) gable, providing access to a loft. Inside the loft, there’s an exposed late 17th/18th-century roof truss with a tie beam and raking struts extending to the principals. The farmhouse is said to contain exposed ceiling beams and open fireplaces.
