Description
Hill Top Farmhouse is a mid-17th century to late 17th century farmhouse, with alterations made in the early 18th century. It is constructed of red brick with plain tile roofs featuring raised verges, and brick ridge stacks. The building comprises a short, central range aligned east-west and facing south, with flanking crosswings; the eastern wing projects to the north, and a north-east annexe is set on the same alignment as the central range. The farmhouse is two storeys and has an attic, with storey bands and coved eaves. The central range breaks slightly forward and has a 2:2:2 window front, featuring casement windows with gauged brick heads. A central six-panel door also has a gauged brick head, and the upper part of the doorway has been filled in with brick and dated 1727.
Inside, the entrance hall features an early 18th century fireplace with a keyed and lugged stone surround, a bolection moulded picture frame above, and a pair of flanking niches with shell-vaulted semi-circular heads and Gibbsian surrounds. A moulded pilaster cornice is present, which is later in date than the doorway infill of 1727. There is an early 18th century dog-leg staircase with a closed string, turned balusters, and a ramped handrail. Above the stairwell is an 18th century plaster ceiling with a dentils-and-egg and dart cornice, and a lobed panel with an egg and dart surround leading to a roundel with a foliated centre, from which a brass chandelier hangs. Exposed timber-framed partitions are visible in the central range, appearing to be re-used material. In the east wing there is a chamfered spine beam with run-out stops, and a large open fireplace with a timber bressumer.
