Description
St Chad's Well is a holy well located approximately 34 meters northwest of the Church of St Chad in Lichfield. It is likely from the 7th century and features a late 20th-century canopy. The structure is made of ashlar and timber, topped with a tiled roof. The well is square and surrounded by paving with a step. Timber posts support a pyramidal tile roof, which is covered by a vine. Nearby, there is a plaque that provides historical context. St Chad established himself at this site with eight companions in 669 when he became Bishop of Mercia and died in 672. The well has since become a center of devotion to the saint, who is still commemorated here.
