Description

School House, dated 1717, is a red brick building with flared brick headers and a plain tile roof, situated north-south, facing west. It has brick end stacks. The building is two storeys high with a gable-lit attic, featuring storey bands, the lower one stepped up over the central door. There are three windows with glazing bar casements and segmental heads, original hinges remain for former shutters. The entrance has a 20th-century door with a segmental head and rectangular overlight. An inscription slab at attic level reads: “THIS HOUSE WAS BUILT AT THE CHARGE OF MR THOMAS BARNES/ NATIVE OF THIS PLACE AND A/ CITIZEN OF LONDON IN THE/YEAR OF OUR LORD 1717. FOR/ THE DWELLING OF A PERSON TO/ TEACH THE CHILDREN OF THIS/VILLAGE TO READ ENGLISH.” A single-storey lean-to extension is located to the left, and a single-storey extension with a 20th-century casement window is to the right. This building is an early example of a schoolmaster’s house, demonstrating group value as a significant feature within the village.
