Description

The Hopwas Pump House is an early 20th-century building constructed in 1925 for Tamworth Waterworks, which was later taken over by South Staffordshire Waterworks. It is made of English-bond red brick with sandstone dressings and features a slate roof with coped verges. The building has a rectangular plan aligned to the northeast and consists of a single storey with a basement.

The exterior showcases a single-bay gable-end entrance adorned with giant clasping rusticated pilasters, a decorative cornice, and a pediment with an oculus. A flight of steps leads up to a round-arched doorway fitted with a 21st-century timber-plank door, surrounded by a moulded architrave and a large cartouche key that displays the foundation date of 1925. Above the entrance, there is a wide ashlar panel inscribed with "TAMWORTH WATERWORKS." The side elevations feature four bays defined by pilasters and tall round-arched windows with glazing bars, while the basement level has in-filled segmental-arch window openings. The rear elevation includes clasping pilasters, an oculus within the gable, and a 21st-century door set within a brick-arch surround.

Inside, the horizontal steam engine has been removed, but the metal gantry crane supported by pilasters remains, along with the braced steel-truss roof. The main hall is mostly empty, with a suite of stud-partitioned offices at the rear. A flight of metal stairs leads down to the basement, which contains remnants of the former engine tanks and modern chlorine treatment machinery, neither of which are considered of special interest. The detached brick water treatment structures located to the north and west of the building are not included in the listing.
