Description

7 and 9 Breadmarket Street is a public house that has been converted into offices and shops. It dates from the early 18th century and has undergone later alterations. The building is made of stucco with a tile roof and features a brick cross-axial stack, showcasing Georgian style. It stands three stories tall and has a five-window range, with two platt bands and a top frieze and cornice.

The central carriageway has paired doors on the altered ground floor, with a late 20th-century shop front to the left and a traditional-style shop front to the right. The right end has an entrance with an overlight above a six-fielded-panel door, and to the left are two windows with sills and 24-pane sashes. The upper floors have windows with sills; the first floor features 12-pane sashes, although the right end has a 4-pane sash. The second floor has 6-pane sashes, but two windows at the end have casements with leaded lights.

Inside, there is an open well staircase with turned balusters, square newels, and a moulded handrail. Historically, this building was known as the Three Crowns public house, where Dr. Johnson stayed during his visits to Lichfield, accompanied by Boswell, who noted that Johnson was 'monarchising with no fewer than three crowns over his royal brow'.
