Description

Brook Farmhouse, along with its garden wall and gate piers, is a farmhouse dated 1694, featuring later alterations and additions. It is constructed of red brick with vitrified headers, an ashlar plinth, quoins, and dressings. The roof is covered with plain tiles and has coped verges on shaped kneelers, with a central brick stack that has a cruciform section. The building has a lobby-entry plan and a two-cell range that is aligned east-west. A stair turret projects from the center of the south face, while a south projecting wing has been added to the west end, and there is an extension at the north-east corner of the main house.

The main house, located to the left, has two storeys and an attic, featuring a moulded first-floor band and a moulded eaves cornice. To the right is a two-storey gabled wing. The facade has three bays with one window, and the casements are topped with brick flat arches and shaped keystones. The central door of the main house has an ovolo-moulded stone surround and a massive lintel, which is dated. The east gable has ground and first-floor windows that retain their original segmental heads, along with bands above the first-floor and attic windows.

Inside, there are exposed ceiling beams with hollow chamfer moulding, a massive fireplace with a cambered arch and moulded surround, and a late 17th-century dog-leg staircase featuring barley sugar twist balusters and newels with ball finials. The front garden is enclosed by a coped brick wall and central square section gate piers that have moulded stone caps. This farmhouse is a notable example of early brick architecture.
