Description

Manor Farm House is a farmhouse dating back to the 18th century, with remnants of an earlier 17th century house. The house is constructed of coursed, squared, and dressed large stone blocks with ashlar dressings. It has a clay tile roof with coped verges on shaped kneelers, and integral stone stacks to the northeast and a brick stack to the northwest corner of the main range.

The main three-bay range of 1708 is aligned northwest-southeast, featuring a narrow central entrance bay. A lower parallel range runs to the rear, terminating at the northwest end with a projecting mid-19th century brick extension wing aligned northwest-southeast, with a further lean-to extension to the northwest side. The main house is two storeys and an attic, with five windows, originally containing two-light chamfer mullioned windows with rebated surrounds. The first-floor window on the left retains original glass and lead cames. A large late 19th or early 20th century glazing bar casement is present on the right-hand side of the ground floor, with the outlines of earlier windows visible on either side. A single-light window with a rebated surround is located to the right of the centre, displaying a mason’s compass mark on the right-hand jamb. A central door has a dated lintel, and a continuous dripstone runs over the ground floor windows, stepping up over the front door.

The northwest gable is four storeys high, with a catslide roof to the rear outshut. A mid- to late-19th century ground floor canted bay with a hipped roof is situated on the right, along with a 20th-century casement on the ground floor left and a first-floor casement on the right, both with straight hood moulds. A first floor three-light chamfer mullioned window is to the left, the central light blind. A second-floor casement, also with a straight hood mould, is located to the right of the centre, alongside a blind two-light chamfer mullioned window with a straight hood mould. A brick wing is positioned to the left, featuring a lean-to extension.

The southeast gable shows the main range on the left and the rear range on the right. The main range has a two-light chamfer mullioned attic window in a rebated surround to the left of centre, and a half-glazed door to the centre. The roofline of an earlier single-storey house is visible. The rear range has a first-floor casement to the left.

The interior of the central bay is framed by timber structure dating back to 1708, featuring square panels and long tension braces of light scantling, extending upwards as roof trusses with a tie beam, collar, queen struts, and horizontal members linking queen struts to principal rafters. A timber-framed smoke hood is located in the northwest first-floor room, likely a remnant of an earlier building. Exposed stopped and chamfered beams are also present throughout.
