Description
Elms Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with later remodelling. It features painted brick that largely replaces an earlier timber frame, and has a clay tile roof with a brick ridge stack. The building has a T-shape plan, consisting of a two-bay fully floored hall range to the west and a two-bay parlour wing to the east. The hall is located in the west bay of the hall range, while the chimney stack is in a narrow bay to the east. Originally, there was a lobby entry with a door on the north side, which is now blocked. The farmhouse is two storeys high, with a gabled wing to the left. It has a 1:2 window arrangement, with casements; the windows in the wing and the ground floor of the hall range have segmental heads, while those on the first floor of the hall range have straight heads. The parlour wing windows are wide, and the hall range window to the first floor on the left is small. There is a single-storey painted stone extension to the west, which has a window on the left and a lower projecting gable in the centre. Additionally, there is a 20th-century brick extension with a single casement attached to the west gable end.
Inside, the farmhouse features a massive inglenook fireplace in the hall, with an ovolo-moulded timber surround. The ceiling beams are ovolo and hollow chamfer moulded. There is a timber-framed partition on the first floor of the crosswing, and a king post roof truss in the west gable of the hall range, with diagonal struts extending from the king post to the principal rafters. The east end of the hall has a queen strut truss. Despite its plain exterior, Elms Farmhouse has an interesting plan and good interior features.
