Description

Nos. 188 and 189 on Horninglow Street is a shop and office building with accommodation above, likely dating from the 16th century or possibly medieval, with remodelling in the 18th century and an extension in the 19th century. The structure is timber-framed at the rear and faced in painted brick at the front, featuring a plain tile roof with gabled ends and brick stacks at the gable ends.

The original front range has a rectangular plan and a first-floor doorway at the center of the rear wall. A later wing at the rear of the left end creates an overall L-shaped plan. The building rises to two and three storeys, with a three-window south front. The left side has two storeys, featuring a large 16-pane sash window on the first floor with a rusticated flat arch. On the right side, there are two 2-light casements on the first floor, and on the second floor, a 3-light casement to the left and a 6-pane sash to the right, all with glazing bars. The ground floor has a small 20th-century shop front on the left and two 20th-century doors on the right, flanked by 20th-century windows. At the rear, there is large exposed timber framing on the left with a tension brace and a first-floor doorway with a cambered head, alongside a later brick wing to the right. The interior has not been inspected.
