Description
51 and 52 High Street is a house with a later shop on the ground floor, dated to 1388 through dendrochronology. The building was extended and remodelled in the 19th century and refurbished in 1996. It is timber-framed, faced, and partly rebuilt in brick and rendered, with plain tile roofs featuring gabled ends. The plan consists of a 2-bay open hall, which may have originally been part of a 3-bay range, along with a later timber-framed wing at the rear.
The exterior is two storeys high with a two-window southeast front, featuring 16-pane sash windows on the first floor and a large 20th-century shop front. The long rear wing is faced in brick and includes an outshut at the angle.
Inside, the 2-bay open hall has a central crown-post truss. The crown-post and a post in the smoke-blackened south gable end have curved down-braces to cambered tie-beams and longitudinal braces to the collar-purlin. Some collars and common-rafter couples appear to have survived, and the tie-beams retain their curved braces. The back wall includes two storey-posts and a wall-plate, while the front wall has been rebuilt in brick. The left bay features a chamfered axial beam and chamfered joists, and the rear wing is timber-framed.
