Description
The stables and cowhouses, located approximately 30 yards west of Old Hall Farmhouse, date from the early to mid-19th century. They are constructed of red brick and feature a clay tile roof with ashlar coped verges. The building forms three sides of a courtyard, consisting of north, south, and west ranges. The layout includes two bays, one bay, six bays, one bay, and two bays, with a central lofted stable range flanked by low connecting links to low projecting gabled cowhouse wings.
The stable range has two-light mullioned windows in the first floor bays, with the second ground floor bay partially overlapped by an inserted sliding door. There is a central ground floor casement, and stable doors on the three right-hand bays and the left-hand bay, which is blocked. These doors have four-centred heads, and there is a tall four-centred carriage arch to the left of centre with a raised keystone. The building features two lozenge pattern loft vents to the right of centre and one hourglass pattern vent on the ground floor to the right. A dentilled eaves course runs along the roofline.
Each connecting link has a four-centred arch stable door. Both wings have two four-centred casements on the ground floor, with the left-hand wing also featuring a central inserted loft opening. The return wall of both wings consists of six bays with bottom hung casements and doors to the east and west of centre, all with four-centred heads.
