Description
The former canal bridge, located about 130 metres south of the Methodist Chapel on Lightmoor Road, dates from around 1790 to the early 19th century. It is constructed of stretcher bond red brick and features a round arch set on a dressed sandstone plinth, creating a barrel vaulted tunnel that is approximately 5 metres long, passing through a bank of spoil. At either end, there are stone rubble and slag abutments. Currently, a footpath runs above the bridge, which may have originally supported a colliery plateway over the Shropshire Union Canal, completed around 1790. An 1882 Ordnance Survey map shows that the canal was replaced by a small mineral line. The bridge likely connected Dawley Parva Colliery to the Lightmoor Iron, Brick and Tile Works.
