Description

The Church of St Peter is a Grade I listed building located on Edgmond High Street. This church dates from the 14th and 15th centuries and incorporates some re-used 13th-century sandstone ashlar materials. The nave features perpendicular north and south aisles, both of which have parapets, while the south aisle is embattled and adorned with crocketed pinnacles, grotesque gargoyles, and three-light perpendicular windows. There is a slightly ogee arched south doorway and a perpendicular south porch with battlements.

The chancel, built in the 14th century, has a steeply pitched roof and a three-light east window with reticulated tracery. The broad west tower, which is in three stages, has diagonal buttresses, two-light perpendicular bell openings, a quatrefoil frieze beneath the embattled parapet, and crocketed pinnacles at the corners. It also features a four-light west window with reticulated tracery. A painted sundial from the 18th century is located on the porch.

Inside, there are four-bay north and south arcades that are perpendicular, supported by tall octagonal piers and double-chamfered arches. The bases and abaci of the north piers are re-used 13th-century work. The nave roof is low pitched with arched braces on corbels, while the chancel roof, added in the late 19th century, is arch braced. The stone reredos, created in 1889 by Bodley and Garner, features carved figures. The church also contains an early Norman font with interlacing patterns, stained glass in the chancel by Powell from 1873, and by Kempe from 1891 and 1896. There is a brass memorial to Francis Yonge dated 1533.
