Description
Provost's House, formerly known as The Rectory, is a large stone house from the early 14th century, featuring later alterations and an 18th-century brick garden front. It has slate and tile roofs. The original house includes three doors leading from the former screens passage to the kitchen, buttery, and pantry, all with arches that have double sunk quadrant mouldings. The north front displays some 14th-century masonry and an embattled gable, along with an off-centre 14th-century porch that has a rebuilt bridge gable and a double chamfered arch. This elevation also features stone mullion windows. The house has two storeys and an attic. The 18th-century south garden front, possibly designed by R Mylne, is made of brick and has an embattled parapet; it consists of two storeys with four bays and sash windows with glazing bars set in segmental arched openings with keyblocks. There is an early 20th-century timber-framed and brick addition to the west and late 19th-century brick wings to the east.
