Description
The former Town Hall, now divided into eight shops, was built in 1860 and designed by architect J Cobb. It features a debased Italianate style, constructed from painted brick with stone dressings. The building is two storeys high and has slightly projecting bays on either side, each with a pediment and one window. The central section contains four windows, all set in moulded architraves with semicircular heads. The outer windows have cornices topped with scroll cresting. The building includes vermiculated quoins at the ground storey, moulded sill and floor bands, a plain frieze, and a moulded eaves cornice supported by brackets. A parapet with inset balustrading is present, featuring a clock at the centre, surrounded by moulded stucco scrolls and garlands, and topped with a lion-head keystone and a segmental pediment. The ground storey has been altered to include modern shop fronts.
