Description

Early 19th century, originally the Lion Hotel, a notable coaching inn. The building is constructed of stucco and stands three storeys high. It has three sash windows; the outer windows are framed by moulded, dog-eared architraves, while the central window is accentuated by a segmental pediment supported by Ionic columns, with garland decoration within the tympanum. The eaves are plain and the roof is tiled. A later Classical style bank front has been added, featuring a Greek Doric pilaster doorcase at the centre, topped with a cornice hood, a plain frieze, and a moulded cornice at the first floor. A covered yard entrance is located on the right-hand side. The interior has been extensively altered. A two-windowed wing on the left-hand side incorporates a modern shop front, which is number 57.
