Description
Longton Centre, formerly known as the Sutherland Institute and Library, was built in 1898 by Wood and Hutchings. This three-storey brick building is enhanced with terracotta and features a plain tiled roof. The outer bays are advanced and have pediments, with three wood mullioned and transomed windows on each floor. The first-floor windows have brick and terracotta arched heads, and long keystones that extend into the pediment above, leading to the attic.
In the central section, there are paired windows on either side of a deep moulded terracotta arched doorway, which has "Sutherland Institute and Free Library" inscribed in the spandrels of the arch. Above the windows, a bas relief terracotta frieze depicts scenes from pottery manufacture. There are wide windows with central round-arched lights above this frieze, and three six-light oriel bay windows in the attic, each with terracotta aprons. The building features a moulded wood modillion eaves cornice and a bellcote flanked by axial stacks. Large studio windows extend through the eaves line on the side elevations.
