Description
The Church of St Bartholomew is a parish church located in Blurton, Stoke on Trent. It was largely built in 1626, replacing an earlier structure from around 1500, with some later additions. The church is constructed from coursed and squared sandstone and features plain tiled roofs. It has a nave with two aisles and a chancel. A bellcote, added by George Gilbert Scott in 1846, is located at the western end of the nave. This bellcote is made of timber and includes pierced quatrefoil panels, topped with a shingle roof and a weather cock.
The south porch, possibly also added by Scott, features heavy timbering on a stone plinth. The inner doorway has a round-arched simple chamfered lintel. The nave contains two three-light hollow chamfered mullioned windows, and there are traces of earlier windows at a higher level that are now blocked. A sundial on the south wall is dated 1668 and bears the initials T.A. The chancel was added in 1750 and incorporates an earlier mullioned window in its south wall. It also has a moulded stone eaves cornice and a plinth that is interrupted in the southwest by a former doorway that is now blocked. The north aisle was added in 1867 by Charles Lynham, constructed of brick with stone facings on the east side and stone mullioned windows.
