Description
Furlong Mill is a mill for the preparation of potting materials, originally built in 1842 and enlarged in 1913, with subsequent alterations. It has a courtyard plan, featuring a frontage range and kilns along with other buildings in the rear yard. The structure is primarily made of brick and has plain tiled roofs.
The two-storey frontage range was constructed in two distinct phases. The main section includes an arched entrance to the yard, which has a cast-iron lintel and a relieving arch above, along with an inscription stone that reads "Furlong Mills. 1842 enlarged 1913," flanked by two windows. Beyond this, there are six bays featuring a round-arched window with wrought-iron glazing bars. To the left is a three-bay section that may be part of the earlier works, displaying segmentally-arched openings on the ground floor, with windows inserted into what was once an arched entry, and sash-type windows above, complete with gauged brick heads.
In the rear yard, there are two calcining kilns adjacent to a 20th-century reinforced concrete building. The kilns are circular with elongated necks, featuring a moulded cap and bands. This mill, along with the two calcining kilns, is the only remaining structure alongside the Etruscan Bone and Flint Mill that was purpose-built for grinding raw materials for the potteries.
